There’s one aspect of Jana Kramer’s job that her husband, Allan Russell, is not a fan of.
While discussing a recent intimate scene between Jamie (Wes Bentley) and Sarah (Dawn Olivieri) featured on Yellowstone season 5, Russell, 43, admitted on Kramer’s “Whine Down” podcast that he wouldn’t feel comfortable if Kramer, 41, took on a role that involved intimate sex scenes. “I was just like, ‘There’s not part of me that will ever, ever, ever allow that, ever, for a man to be that close to you like that [on set],” the Scotland native shared on Monday, December 9.
When asked by Kramer if he would make an exception for a Taylor Sheridan show such as Yellowstone, Russell stood his ground. “I’ll be, like, phoning the producers and threatening the producers [like], ‘You need to change that scene. For the good of your health, you need to change this scene,’” he stated.
As someone outside of the entertainment industry, Russell said he doesn’t think actors filming sex scenes is “healthy for any relationship.” He explained: “That’s not good for a marriage, that type of role, it’s not, especially [for] a man who’s not in the acting world. It’s difficult. So, therefore, that’s my opinion based on [the fact that] I’m not in that world.”
Though Kramer empathized with her husband’s viewpoint, she also noted that shooting those kinds of scenes is something that comes with the job — and something most actors don’t particularly enjoy.
“It’s literally the most uncomfortable thing ever,” she stated, noting that the only people usually allowed on set to film those scenes are the actors and the sound technicians. “It’s so uncomfortable for the people that are doing it. And it’s not a sexy thing.”
At the end of the day, Russell said he would agree to Kramer taking on a more NSFW part but doesn’t know “how I would handle it.”
Kramer and Russell announced they got engaged after six months of dating in May 2023, and the pair welcomed their first child together, son Roman, that November.
Kramer’s kids Jolie, 8, and Jace, 6, whom she shares with ex-husband Mike Caussin, were by her side when she and Russell wed in Scotland back in July.
Later on Monday’s podcast, Kramer and Russell asked their guests Robyn Lively and Bart Johnson to weigh in on how sex scenes can affect romantic relationships. Lively, 52, “totally” understood Russell’s point of view, but stated that “women are wired differently” when it comes to approaching those kinds of scenes.
“There’s nothing sexy about it. It’s uncomfortable. It’s embarrassing. It’s like you want to die,” she shared. “We haven’t had many, thankfully, experiences like that since we’ve been married, but like, I’ve got to tell you, those scenes are horrible.”
Johnson, 53, backed her up, adding: “You’re creating the illusion of this really sexy, crazy moment, but in reality, it’s not like that at all.”
