A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of killing his father at a popular waterfall in Southern California, authorities said.

The identity of the suspect and the alleged victim were not released.

The incident occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. Saturday on Mount Baldy Road, near Stoddard Canyon Falls, in the San Gabriel Mountains, according to statements from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies responded to a call about an assault with a deadly weapon, the sheriff’s department said in a statement Saturday. Deputies found a man suffering “from trauma to his upper torso.” The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff’s department said.

A man seen driving away from the scene was involved in a traffic collision a few miles away.

In a statement Sunday, the sheriff’s department said the man involved in the vehicle collision was the victim’s 19-year-old son.

“Based on evidence at the scene, coupled with statements made by the son and witnesses, the son was arrested and booked for murder at the San Dimas Station,” the sheriff’s department said.

The case will be passed on to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for potential charges, the sheriff’s department said.

No representative with the county prosecutor’s office could immediately be reached for comment Monday afternoon.
