Martha Stewart revealed her preferred method for eating bagels — and the internet has thoughts.
“How to eat a bagel!!!!!! Taught years ago by my daughter Alexis Stewart,” the businesswoman, 84, wrote via Instagram on Friday, December 12, alongside a slideshow breaking down her process. “1. Choose a @popupbagels bagel I love poppyseed.”
Martha included a photo of the bagel, a tub of cream cheese on a plate and a lemon wedge. The image had a red X next to the bagel, indicating that it should not be eaten that way.
In the next step, Martha shared that she cuts the baked good in half. While most people would stop the cutting process there, Martha advised readers to follow her next method.
“Take a half of a half and break into sweet little pieces,” she continued.
In an additional picture, Martha showed that she takes “one quarter” of the bagel broken into little pieces scattered around the plate. After that, Martha tops the pieces off with a “modicum” of her “favorite cream cheese.”
“Sweet little pieces can be topped with flavored or unflavored cream cheese,” she wrote. “Always satisfied never too full !”
Many fans took to the comments section to weigh in on Martha’s bagel preparation process.
“Love you Martha but it’s 2025 we can eat whole bagels now ❤️,” one user replied, while another shared, “Queen Martha, this is a violation of the bagel code of ethics 🚫.”
Others shared their concerns that Martha’s method was promoting unhealthy diet culture.
“I love you but this is straight up boomer diet culture. Eat the bagel girl,” one user wrote, while another retorted, “Almond mom tips.”
Several users also had questions about what Martha did with the lemon slice that was featured in her first photo but disappeared for the other shots.
“What about the Lemon?” one person asked, as another quipped, “Are we drenching the 3/4 of the bagel we’re not eating with the lemon wedge, queen?”
Martha made a name for herself in the lifestyle sphere, writing cookbooks and hosting her own cooking show. She is also the founder of her home and hospitality company Martha Stewart Living. Over the years, she’s shared countless tips on how to prepare meals and be a good host.
Earlier this month, Martha raised eyebrows when she revealed that she wants to be composted when she dies.
“I’m going to be composted,” Martha said on a December episode of the “50 & Unfiltered” podcast. “When one of my horses dies, we dig a giant hole really deep in one of my fields — we have a pet cemetery — and the horse is wrapped in a clean, white linen sheet and very carefully dropped down into this giant, lovely grave. I want to go there.”
Martha shared that she plans to be laid to rest on her property, so her wishes should not affect anyone else.
“It’s not going to hurt anyone. It’s my property,” she explained. “These coffin things and all that stuff? No way.”
The TV personality added that her last meal would be scrambled eggs and butter.
