More than a dozen transgender activists, including notorious military intelligence leaker Chelsea Manning, were arrested Thursday after storming a women’s restroom inside the US Capitol complex.
The activists were protesting a new rule unveiled by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) last month requiring individuals to use single-sex facilities that correspond with their biological sex.
“Approximately 15 people were arrested for D.C. Code § 22–1307 – Crowding, Obstructing, or Incommoding – for illegally protesting inside the Cannon House Office Building,” a Capitol Police spokesperson told The Post, noting that Manning was one of the arrestees.
Manning, a 36-year-old former Army intelligence analyst, was sentenced to 35 years in prison in 2013 for leaking classified information to WikiLeaks — but released in 2017 after receiving a commutation from then-President Barack Obama.
Manning was born as a biological male and went by “Bradley Manning” during court proceedings but underwent gender treatments in prison and now identifies as a woman.
Demonstrators staging the sit-in held banners that read “Flush Bathroom Bigotry” and “Congress Stop Pissing On Our Rights” as they directed chants at Johnson and Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC).
“From leaking state secrets to taking leaks in the women’s restroom, just can’t seem to get it right,” Mace quipped on X, sharing video footage of the bathroom brouhaha.
The 47-year-old congresswoman sparked the bathroom debate after she introduced a resolution last month, prompted by Rep.-elect Sarah McBride’s (D-Del.) election to the lower chamber, which sought to ban transgender women from using female facilities inside the Capitol.
Gabrielle Lipsky, a spokeswoman for Mace, told The Post that the protesters “definitely should have been apprehended” under the new House rules.
“Progressive politics is the most regressive threat to women. They just keep proving our point,” she said of the protest. “They come here and make a public spectacle out of putting men in our bathrooms intentionally to intimidate women.”
McBride, 34, will become the first openly transgender member of Congress when she’s sworn-in next month.
“Biological men do not belong in private women’s spaces. Period. Full stop. End of story,” Mace wrote on X, when she announced her legislative proposal.
Mace and her staff have received several vile threats in the wake of the congresswoman’s push to limit access to single-sex facilities.
The House speaker’s office did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
