Tesla bursts into flames after crashing in posh New York suburb, killing 2 occupants

A speeding Tesla violently smashed into a sheet of rock and burst into flames on a Westchester County road Tuesday morning, killing the two occupants inside, officials said.

The horrific wreck happened in Pelham Manor near the Bronx border around 9:15 a.m. after the ritzy car zipped right through the intersection and crashed into the barrier. The car quickly became an inferno as local firefighters rushed to the scene.

The driver and their passenger were pronounced dead after the flames were put out, Pelham Manor fire chief Michael Greco said. Their identities were not revealed Tuesday night.

While it took about 20 minutes to extinguish the fire, firefighters were on scene for hours to remove the bodies and secure the lithium ion batteries that were strewn across the roadway.

“We heard popping and we saw that it was a Tesla so we knew the battery was compromised and was also involved with the fire,” Greco told The Post, noting the ruptured battery made it easier to handle the fire.

Footage obtained by CBS NY 2 from a nearby car service station showed the Tesla race through the intersection and crash into rock boulders. In the aftermath, the Tesla looks like a crumpled pile of scrap metal.

“We heard a bang and we ran toward the garage and the next thing we saw, we saw the car on fire against the wall,” Chris Ganpat, owner of Manor Auto Service Center, told the station.

“I was very upset for the people inside, it is Christmas time and I feel really bad for their family right now,” he added.

The cause of the crash has not been determined.
